Jazzland Artist

Growing up in Skien, Norway, son of organist Kristoffer Kleive and brother of organist Iver, Audun Kleive began his career playing drums in various rock bands, moved to Oslo to study at the Musikkhøyskolen, and became a member of jazz-rock bands Lotus (1981-83) and Oslo 13 (1981-84), making his recording debut with the album Anti-therapy (1983).

He soon became a much sought after drummer for several Oslo-based bands, playing in 1983 with the Anne-Marie Giørtz Quintet at various festivals, and on the album release Breaking out, was a member of the Frode Alnæs/Nils Petter Molvær quartet, and had a band together with Sidsel Endresen during 1983-84, played in AHA/Extended Nose (releases Keep nose in front 1984, Jamaha 1986 and Slow but sudden, langsam aber plötzlich 1988-90) Kleive was then involved in the Brødrene Balke Etno Funk group (Kongsberg), the Knut Riisnæs Quartet (Molde) 1984, Terje Rypdals trio The Chasers from 1984 (with releases in 1985, 86, 88 og 94), the Circulasione Totale Orchestra (Stavanger) 1986-89 (releasing Accent in 1987), once again together with Oslo 13 (on the releases Off balance 1987 and Live 1992), as well as Trio 87 from 1987-90 (record release in 1987, and concerts in New York in 1989) He has also performed on several tours and releases together with Swedish musicians, notably the group Entra Live, also recording/playing on the following artis's releasesŠ Jon Eberson trio (1986), Jon Eberson/Sidsel Endresen (1987), Per Husby (1990), Palisanderkvartetten (1991-92), Jan Gunnar Hoff (1991, 95 and 96), Marilyn Mazur's Future Song (1994), Gunnar Andreas Berg (1996), Bugge Wesseltoft (New conception of jazz 1995-96), Bendik Hofseth (1997) and the group Decoy (1997).

Kleive belongs with, and remains as one of Norway's select and elite dynamic musicians, voted by the Norwegian Jazzmusic Union in 1989 as Jazz Musician of the year in 1989, he has also since 1990 had a fruitful and productive collaboration with Jon Balke and Per Jørgensen (releases On and on 1991, Jøkleba! 1992 og Jøkleba live 1994, as well as being a member of Jon Balke's Magnetic North ensemble since 1993 (with release same year). Since 1991 he has also played and particpated in a quintet together with Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft and Bjørn Kjellemyr (notably with Åpent Øre in 1991) and also the album Music for men and machines from 1991-92 together with Jon Eberson.

In 1996 he was the one and only Norwegian jazz musician to be picked up as guest soloist to European City of Culture that year, Copenhagen. The same year he also recorded the cd Going with the flow together with Olga Konkova and Carl Morten Iversen ­ and his most recent self-penned productions carry the title Bitt (with releases in 1996/97). His most recent award was in 1998, where he was given the Klart Svar prize at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival.
